Mystery Play of Elche, Religious drama in Elche, Spain

The Mystery Play of Elche is a liturgical drama dating from the Middle Ages, which enacts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

It has been performed every year in August since at least the 14th century.

In 2001, UNESCO declared it one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The play is performed in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Elche.

It's the only liturgical drama of its kind that has been preserved in a living tradition within the community.
