Atalaya Castle

Atalaya Castle is a stone fortress in Villena built on a hilltop that overlooks the town and shapes the local skyline. It features a central keep with multiple stories and double defensive walls that demonstrate its strategic importance.

The fortress was built in the late 12th century under the Almohad Empire to protect the Muslim population. Control passed to Christian rulers after King James I conquered it in 1240.

The fortress served as a residence for medieval nobility and intellectuals who created important literary works within its walls. The spaces inside reflect the lives of those who inhabited them across different centuries and cultures.

The interior wall and the first two floors of the keep contain vault structures that are found in no other Spanish castle. Only the fortress of Biar shares this distinctive architectural feature, making the design truly special.
