Vega Baja del Segura

The Vega Baja del Segura is an administrative region in Alicante Province comprising 27 municipalities, including Torrevieja and Orihuela. The territory spans flat coastal areas and is shaped by several smaller rivers that link the various towns together.

The area was originally shaped by agriculture, with irrigation systems that had been used for cultivation for centuries. From the 20th century onward, focus gradually shifted to tourism and residential development, particularly after the 1960s.

The region blends modern residential developments with agricultural traditions still visible in smaller villages. Many towns hold local festivals and markets where visitors can experience the daily rhythms of community life.

The region is well connected by roads and is best explored by car, as the municipalities are spread out. Most towns have parking available, and Torrevieja offers the most services and facilities as the largest center.

The area is known for its artificial lakes and lagoons that originated from old salt production and today serve as bird sanctuaries. These water bodies have become valuable habitats for various migratory bird species.
