Torreta de Guardamar, Military communications tower in Guardamar del Segura, Spain

Torreta de Guardamar is a triangular steel structure anchored to the ground by steel cables that distribute horizontal forces across the landscape. The guyed mast design allows this construction to reach exceptional heights while maintaining stability through a system of supporting cables.

The United States Navy built this mast in 1962 during the Cold War as part of military cooperation agreements with Spain. It was created during a period of intense strategic partnership between the two nations in the Mediterranean region.

Local people call this installation "Torre de los Americanos" because of its American origins and the way it was initially managed by foreign personnel.

The mast operates daily to communicate with submarines from the Cartagena naval base without them needing to surface for reception. Its continuous operation enables long-range communication for strategic applications across the region.

The structure reaches about 370 meters in height, making it the tallest building in Spain and surpassing every skyscraper in the country. This exceptional height makes it a visible landmark recognizable from great distances across the landscape.
