Sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena, Novelda, Art Nouveau church in Novelda, Spain
The Sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena is an Art Nouveau church in Novelda featuring two lateral towers about 25 meters (82 feet) tall, each crowned with stone crosses. The exterior displays polychrome tiles and river pebbles that create a distinctive decorative effect across its surfaces.
Construction began in 1918 under architect José Sala Sala, replacing an earlier medieval hermitage on the site. The project unfolded across three building phases and reached completion in 1946.
The sanctuary displays Valencian Art Nouveau features that emerged during Novelda's period of local prosperity and merchant investment. The building reflects regional craftsmanship techniques combined with early 20th-century design approaches.
The sanctuary sits about 3 kilometers (2 miles) from Novelda's town center, positioned next to the La Mola Moorish castle. It welcomes visitors year-round for services and guided visits.
The interior layout follows the shape of an ointment jar, referencing the Christian tradition of Mary Magdalene anointing Jesus's feet. This architectural design choice merges modern form with biblical symbolism.
