Castillo del Río, Medieval castle near Vinalopó River, Aspe, Spain
Castillo del Río is a medieval fortress near Aspe in Spain with multiple towers positioned along its walls. The site contains both defensive and residential areas built on a hilltop overlooking the Vinalopó River.
The fortress was built during the early Almoravid period in the 12th century and served as the original settlement of Aspe. It functioned as a defensive stronghold for the developing population in the region for centuries.
The castle displays Islamic building techniques with rammed earth walls and living spaces integrated into the defensive structure. Visitors can observe how defense and daily life were combined in a single fortified space.
The site sits on a hilltop and can be reached by car or on foot from Aspe. Good walking shoes are recommended, as the climb is steep and the paths are unpaved.
Archaeological excavations at the site uncovered one of only two Arabic plows ever discovered in Spain. The artifact is now displayed in the Provincial Archaeological Museum in Alicante.
