Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Socorro, Aspe

The Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Socorro is a baroque church built on a cross-shaped plan with a central nave and side chapels along its sides. Three carved entrance portals lead into the interior, which opens to a dome that rises above the space.

Work on the structure began in 1650 under architect Francesc Verde and continued under Lorenzo Chapuli, who completed the dome and bell tower by 1737. The long construction period shows how the design evolved over time.

The basilica honors the town's protective saint and displays red crosses carved within circles on its pillars to represent the twelve apostles. The pendentives show images of the four evangelists, which hold special meaning for worshippers entering the space.

The building operates as an active place of worship with regular services throughout the week. Visitors should dress respectfully and be mindful of ongoing ceremonies when entering or exploring the interior.

The main altar was fashioned in the Rococo style during the late 1700s and stands as a striking visual focal point inside. This ornate work contrasts notably with the broader baroque structure that surrounds it.
