Antigua fábrica de Cemento Asland

The Antigua fabrica de Cemento Asland is a cement factory situated on a mountain slope in Castellar de n'Hug. The site extends across different levels with a quarry, processing installations, and storage areas that flow into one another functionally.

Eusebi Güell founded this cement factory in 1901 as the first industrial cement production in Catalonia. It operated until 1975, when the facility permanently closed.

The factory displays Catalan modernism architecture with flat brick vaults on metal frameworks, designed in collaboration with architect Rafael Guastavino. This building style was unusual for industry at the time and shapes how the place looks today.

The site is accessible by walking paths that move through the grounds and show different areas of the former production. Visitor groups are guided by people familiar with the place who talk about the earlier work and the production techniques.

The factory cleverly used the mountain slope to move materials downward through gravity, saving energy in the production process. This approach made operations much more efficient than factories built on level ground.
