Palace of Justice of Barcelona, Courthouse building in Sant Pere district, Barcelona, Spain
The Palace of Justice is a courthouse in the Sant Pere district featuring eight domes and a grand portico entrance that leads into the building. A monumental staircase illuminated by stained glass skylights dominates the interior and connects the different courtroom levels.
Architects Domenech Estapa and Enric Sagnier built this building between 1887 and 1898 as a new home for Barcelona's courts. The construction combines Neo-Baroque and Neo-Gothic style elements to create an impressive institutional building.
The main entrance features a sculptural work by Agusti Querol depicting a figure symbolizing judicial authority and overlooking the space. This sculpture forms part of a broader tradition of adorning important public buildings with symbolic works.
The building sits at Pg. Lluis Companys 14-16 and continues to operate as a working courthouse with restricted access during proceedings. Plan to visit outside of active court sessions for the best chance to see the main spaces and architecture.
The artist Josep M. Sert created extensive mural paintings throughout the interior in 1908, still visible today. These frescoes add an artistic layer to the functional courthouse that visitors often overlook.
