Church of Sant Bertomeu, Xàbia, Gothic church in Xàbia, Spain.
The Church of Sant Bertomeu is a Valencian Gothic sanctuary with a central nave divided into sections and flanked by side aisles. Buttresses frame small chapels along the walls, while the ceiling features a distinctive star-shaped ribbed vault that defines the interior space.
Construction started in the 14th century with the presbytery and tower, then expanded significantly in the 16th century under architect Domingo de Urteaga. This later phase gave the building much of its current character.
The church is named after Saint Bartholomew, the city's patron saint. It has served as the spiritual center of the community for centuries and remains a focal point of local life and gatherings.
The main entrance is located at Plaza de la Iglesia in the town center. Visit in the morning when natural light fills the interior spaces and the building is more accessible to visitors.
Five cannons outside the building stand as reminders of historical pirate attacks on the coast. The bell tower still displays arrow slits, evidence of a time when the structure served as a defensive watchtower.
