Church of San Francisco de Asís, Bilbao

The Church of San Francisco de Asis in Bilbao is a Gothic Revival structure with two towering spires and a grand rose window centered on the main facade. The building uses sandstone quarried from Mount Oiz and contains three elongated interior naves.

Construction of the church began in 1890 under architect Luis de Landecho and progressed through several building phases over the following decades. The towers were completed in 1906, followed by the installation of the rose window.

The stained glass windows from Munich and Venetian mosaics depicting Saint Francis of Assisi fill the interior with artistic beauty. These works reflect the spiritual devotion that has centered on this place for visitors and worshippers.

The church is located at Hurtado de Amézaga 21 near Abando metro station and features an elevated entrance area that requires climbing exterior stairs. This elevated design means the building sits noticeably above street level.

The building was inscribed as part of Bilbao's Old Town on the UNESCO World Heritage list, recognizing its historical and artistic value alongside neighboring structures. This designation links the church to a larger network of protected heritage throughout the city center.
