Edificio El Moderno

Edificio El Moderno stands at the corner of Policarpo Sanz Street and Carral Street, displaying French architectural elements such as stone balconies and Corinthian columns. The six-story structure, with a basement, ground level, mezzanine, three upper floors, and an attic space called El Palomar, was originally built as a rental housing building.

The building was designed in 1902 by Polish-French architect Michel Pacewicz and built for Count Manuel Bárcena Franco. It emerged during a period of economic growth in Vigo when the city was developing into a modern port and commercial center.

The building displays the skilled stonework and ornamental details that became fashionable in Vigo during the early 1900s. Visitors can observe the elaborate decorations and proportions that reflected the changing character of the city at that time.

The building is located in the city center and is easily accessible on foot, while its corner position makes it visible from several streets. Visitors get the best view of the facade details in early morning when light emphasizes the stonework.

The rounded corner section connects two symmetrical wings and originally featured a decorative dome that was altered during later renovations. This architectural feature makes the building an interesting example of how structures adapt over time.
