Edifici i Teatre Olympia, Theatre and residential building in central Valencia, Spain.
The Edifici i Teatre Olympia is a multi-story building in central Valencia that brings together residential apartments, commercial spaces, and a theatre, with the theatre entrance opening onto San Vicente Mártir Street. The ground floor holds shops and the theatre lobby, which features double-height ceilings and a row of pink marble columns from Alicante.
Architect Vicente Rodríguez Martín finished the building in 1915, using a metal frame structure and installing an elevator, both unusual features for Valencia at the time. The project reflected the city's ambition to embrace modern construction methods that were gaining ground in other European cities.
The interior decoration of the theatre follows a naturalistic style with plant-inspired motifs and warm colors that differ noticeably from the more restrained facade. Visitors who step into the lobby find themselves surrounded by ornamental details that reflect the Valencian version of Art Nouveau, known locally as Modernisme.
The building is easy to reach on foot from central Valencia, sitting directly on San Vicente Mártir Street. Street-level access to the lobby and commercial spaces makes it straightforward to visit, even if you are simply passing through to take a look.
The building sits on a trapezoidal plot, which gave the architect no choice but to design each facade differently to follow the irregular street lines. This means the structure looks noticeably different depending on which angle you approach it from.
