The Santuario da Virxe das Ermidas is a Catholic pilgrimage church set in a valley near As Ermidas, in the municipality of O Bulo in Galicia, Spain. The building features decorative stonework and bishops' coats of arms visible both on the facade and inside.
Construction of the current sanctuary began in 1624, following a bishop's recovery from illness attributed to the Virgin venerated at this spot. That event turned what had been a modest local site into an established pilgrimage destination.
The Via Crucis path winds through fourteen small chapels set along the hillside, each containing carved figures that depict religious scenes. Walking the full route gives visitors a direct sense of how pilgrims have moved through this place for generations.
The sanctuary is reached by a narrow road through a river valley, so driving carefully and allowing extra time is a good idea. The Via Crucis path is done on foot over uneven ground, so sturdy shoes are worth bringing.
Near the sanctuary, a small river beach formed between two old mills, one of which was built directly into the rocks with a roof made of stone slabs. That mill is a rare example of how local builders worked with the natural landscape rather than around it.
