Karraspio

Karraspio is a sandy beach in Mendexa featuring fine golden sand that stretches for about 420 meters along the coast. The beach reaches a width of roughly 160 meters and offers changing facilities, showers, and restrooms for visitors.

During the Middle Ages, the nearby San Nicolas Island served as an isolation point for people with leprosy, marking a significant chapter in this coastal area's past. The island's role reflects how the local geography was used to separate affected populations from the mainland.

The beach sits within the Basque Country, where the sea remains deeply woven into how people spend their time and connect with this coastline. Fishing traditions shape the rhythm of life in this part of the region.

The beach has lifeguard supervision, showers, toilets, and nearby parking available during the main season. It works best to visit in warmer months when all facilities are open and the water is more inviting.

At low tide, visitors can walk across a natural sand path to San Nicolas Island, where wild rabbits and grazing goats live freely. This temporary passage makes island exploration possible without needing a boat.
