La deessa

La deessa is a marble sculpture of a female figure with classical proportions and refined lines. The original version is located inside the City Hall vestibule, while a replica stands in Plaça Catalunya.

Josep Clarà created this sculpture in the 1920s as part of a new artistic direction in Catalonia. It was displayed at major international exhibitions and became recognized as an important work of the period.

The work reflects the Catalan Noucentisme movement through its focus on classical proportions and refined artistic technique. It shows how early 20th-century artists interpreted traditional subjects with a modern sensibility.

The original is housed inside City Hall, which has more restricted access, while the replica in Plaça Catalunya is freely visible and part of the outdoor plaza. Both versions allow you to experience the work in different settings.

The sculpture was temporarily removed due to concerns about its representation, then reinstated for a major international event that put Barcelona in the spotlight. This shows how artistic acceptance shifted during that period.
