Lezetxiki, Archaeological cave in Arrasate/Mondragón, Spain
The Lezetxiki cave contains multiple chambers with geological formations and archaeological deposits spanning different prehistoric periods.
Excavations at Lezetxiki, initiated by priest José Miguel de Barandiarán between 1956 and 1968, have revealed human remains from Homo Heidelbergensis and Neanderthals.
The site holds substantial archaeological evidence of early human settlements, including marine shells transported by Neanderthals and various bone tools.
Visitors need to register through Mondragón Town Hall for guided tours, which start from the town square near the city council office.
Researchers discovered a female Homo Heidelbergensis humerus bone and remains of extinct animals including cave bears and Megaloceros giganteus.
