Penyagolosa

Penyagolosa is a protected natural park in Castellon Province that encompasses the highest peak in the Valencia region. The landscape spreads across about 1,094 hectares and is dominated by black pine and Pyrenean oak woodlands.

The area received official protection status as a natural park in 2006 when the Valencian regional government designated it to preserve the mountain environment. This designation followed growing concerns about protecting the region's ecological balance and traditional highland practices.

The Sanctuary of Sant Joan draws pilgrims from surrounding villages who travel here for religious processions throughout the year. This sacred site connects communities across the region through shared spiritual traditions.

The visitor center at La Casa Forestal in Xodos provides information about trails and wildlife observation areas. This facility helps you plan your visit and choose routes suited to your experience level.

The park is home to Cavanilles geranium, a plant species named after the botanist who first identified it in this region. This rare species grows mainly on this mountain and makes the place botanically significant.
