Playa de la Arena, Beach in Biscay, Spain
Playa de la Arena is a beach on the Cantabrian coast in Biscay, with dark sand and rock formations flanking both sides. It sits at the mouth of the Barbadun river, between the small settlements of Pobena and La Arena.
The settlements around this beach, especially Pobena, grew over centuries as fishing communities on the Basque coast. In the 20th century, the rise of heavy industry in Biscay heavily shaped the region before coastal tourism took hold.
The name La Arena simply means "the sand" in Spanish, a plain reference to the dark, coarse shoreline that gives the beach its character. On summer weekends, families from across the Basque Country come here to picnic and swim along the shore.
The beach has showers, lifeguard services, and parking at both entrances near Pobena and La Arena. Waves can be strong when the weather changes, so it is worth checking conditions before going into the water.
The Barbadun estuary behind the beach is part of the Natura 2000 conservation network and shelters rare wading and migratory birds that can be spotted from the sand itself. This combination of a swimming beach next to a protected wetland is rare along this coastline.
