Mercat de les Flors, Performing arts center in El Poble-sec, Barcelona, Spain
Mercat de les Flors is a performing arts center in the El Poble-sec neighborhood of Barcelona, housing three performance spaces of different sizes. The spaces are designed for dance, physical theater, and circus, and together can seat a broad range of audiences.
The building was constructed as the Palace of Agriculture for the 1929 Universal Exposition held in Barcelona. Decades later it was converted into a performing arts venue.
Mercat de les Flors is widely seen in Barcelona as the main stage for contemporary dance and physical theater. Many productions are made with artists from other countries, giving the program an open and international feel.
The center sits in El Poble-sec, a neighborhood at the foot of Montjuic hill, and is easy to reach on foot from the area. It is worth checking the program in advance, as events and workshops change often.
The entrance hall is dominated by a dome about 40 feet (12 meters) across, created by Mallorcan artist Miquel Barcelo as a permanent installation. It is not a temporary exhibit but a fixed part of the building itself.
