Fortaleza de Sarria, Medieval castle in Sarria, Spain.
The Fortaleza de Sarria is a medieval castle in the northern Spanish town of Sarria, featuring a preserved main tower called Torre del Batallón. This tower has stone walls with defensive features and rises approximately 14 meters high.
The fortress was built in the 12th century and was reconstructed after the Irmandiña Revolt between 1467 and 1469, when local peasants destroyed it. This uprising marked a turning point in local power and the building's fate.
The carved family crests visible on the walls represent three noble houses that held power over this location across centuries. These stone symbols show how local power structures became part of the building itself.
The structure sits in the old town center and can be reached by walking up Rúa do Castelo street, which leads directly to the site. The approach passes through narrow lanes typical of the medieval town layout.
The tower contains a remarkable internal vault positioned about seven meters above ground level. This unusual arrangement was a defensive technique to protect the interior space from direct attack.
