BARTS, Performance venue and movie theater in El Raval, Barcelona, Spain.
BARTS is a theater and cinema venue in El Raval, Barcelona, with a main room that can seat around 900 people or hold around 1,500 standing. Two additional screening rooms of different sizes allow the venue to run theater, concerts, and film screenings at the same time.
The building stands on the site of the Gran Teatro Español, which opened in 1909 and originally hosted French vaudeville and operetta. It later became Studio 54, a nightclub, before taking on its current shape as a mixed-use cultural space.
The name BARTS stands for Barcelona Audiovisual Resources and Technology Space, which explains why concerts, theater, and cinema all share the same building. The mix of art forms is visible in the daily programming and the way different audiences pass through the same entrance.
The venue sits on Avenida del Paral·lel and is within walking distance of the Paral·lel metro station. The surrounding area of El Raval has plenty of bars and restaurants that make it easy to plan a visit around an event.
The building houses a cinema library with films held across different media formats, alongside archival materials for research. This collection goes well beyond what most visitors would expect from a live performance venue.
