Les Tres Xemeneies, Industrial chimneys in El Poble-sec, Barcelona, Spain.
Les Tres Xemeneies are three red-brick chimneys standing about 72 meters tall from a former power station. They rise from a site near Barcelona's port and are now part of a public garden with paths and seating areas.
The first chimney was built in 1896, followed by two more added in 1908 and 1912 as Barcelona's energy needs grew. Each expansion reflected the city's rapid industrial growth during that period.
The chimneys stand in El Poble-sec as symbols of Barcelona's industrial past and connection to its working-class heritage. They mark a time when energy production shaped the city's growth and identity.
The chimneys are best viewed from the Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies, a public garden on the former power station site where visitors can walk and sit. The Paral·lel metro stations on lines L2 and L3 provide direct access to the area.
La Canadenca power station, which operated these chimneys, was the site of a major 1919 workers' strike lasting 42 days. This strike led Spain to become one of the first nations to legally establish an eight-hour workday.
