Casa del gremi de velers, Baroque guild headquarters in Sant Pere Santa Caterina i la Ribera, Spain
Casa del Gremi de Velers is a baroque building in the old city decorated with intricate carved patterns on its exterior walls. These decorative works feature detailed human figures and floral designs that cover much of the facade surface.
Silk weavers received their first official regulations from King Charles V in 1533 and initially met in Santa Anna Church. The building we see today was constructed in 1758 and later became home to the College of Major Art of Silk.
The building served as the meeting place for silk weavers and remains a symbol of their craft tradition in the city. The collections and spaces inside reflect how important this trade was to Barcelona's economy and daily life.
The building sits at Via Laietana 50 in the historic district and connects Sant Pere Més Alt street with Plaça Lluís Millet. Walking through this area, you can explore the medieval lanes and appreciate the architecture from street level.
The facade holds a sculptural niche with a Virgin Mary figure carved by artist Joan Enrich that you can see from street level. This religious sculpture reveals how faith was linked to the weavers' craft and daily work.
