Església del Sagrat Cor de Vistabella, Art Nouveau church in Vistabella, Spain
The Església del Sagrat Cor de Vistabella is an Art Nouveau church with a square floor plan and four substantial pillars. These pillars support dynamic arches that rise in stepped formations toward the central vault, creating the internal spatial structure.
In 1918 Vistabella residents requested a church from the Archdiocese because they had to travel to Secuita for religious services. Construction then began using materials and labor available locally.
Local residents contributed two working days per week to construct this church using limestone from nearby quarries and bricks from the Morell factory.
The building features a double roof system with an air chamber between the vaulted structures and thick tiles that regulate interior temperature naturally. This construction approach keeps the interior comfortable regardless of external weather conditions.
Architect Jujol employed ingenious methods and crafted ornamental elements from gypsum drawings and recycled condensed milk cans to work within tight constraints. These unconventional materials reveal how creatively limited budgets were approached during construction.
