Fàbrica Cosme Toda, Noucentisme industrial building in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Spain.
Fàbrica Cosme Toda is a three-story industrial building with rectangular windows that emphasize its long rectangular form. The structure has three separate modules at the ends and middle, one of which connects to an attached director's house.
The building was constructed in 1883 by master builder Marià Tomàs i Barba following the industrial design traditions of the late 1800s. Major expansion work in 1923 under architect Antoni Puig i Gairalt gave it its present form.
The building shows traits of the Noucentisme movement with exposed brick walls and decorative floral details that define Catalan industrial architecture. These ornamental elements set the factory apart from typical industrial structures of its era.
The complex consists of multiple connected industrial and administrative spaces spread across the grounds. Visitors should check in advance which sections are accessible to the public, as the site is somewhat removed from the center.
During the Spanish Civil War in 1937, the factory was seized by workers and converted to produce military equipment instead of commercial goods. This brief chapter shows how the facility was repurposed for wartime production.
