L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Metropolitan municipality in Barcelona Province, Spain.
L'Hospitalet de Llobregat is a municipality in Barcelona Province that stretches from the slopes of Montjuïc down to the plain of the Llobregat River. Its buildings range from residential blocks along broad avenues to commercial zones that border directly on the neighboring city of Barcelona.
The settlement owes its name to a 12th-century hospital that stood along a pilgrimage route and sheltered travelers. Over the course of the 20th century, the municipality grew rapidly through migration and industrialization to become the second largest city in Catalonia.
The church of Santa Eulàlia rises on Torrent Gornal, where it served for centuries as the spiritual center of this growing settlement. Its solid bell tower was added later and still shapes the skyline along many streets in the older quarters.
Several metro lines connect the municipality to Barcelona and other neighboring towns, so many destinations are within walking distance or by public transport. Most streets run at right angles and are easy to read, which simplifies orientation.
La Florida ranks among the most densely populated neighborhoods in Europe, with many residents living in apartment towers from the 1960s and 1970s. This part of town shows especially clearly how fast urban space can grow when industry and migration meet.
