Fàbrica de Tabacs

Fàbrica de Tabacs is an industrial complex in Tarragona with multiple buildings arranged around a central square, featuring classical architectural details like arcades and decorated facades. The site contains various sections, some now converted to office and rehearsal spaces for contemporary use.

Construction of the tobacco factory began in 1923 but was halted when workers discovered a Roman-Christian burial site during excavation. This archaeological discovery prompted government plans to create a museum on the grounds in 1928.

The former industrial site now serves as a venue for art exhibitions and cultural events that draw the local community. Visitors can see how the restored spaces host performances and creative activities throughout the year.

The building is located at Passeig de la Independència 3-15 and is easy to find as a prominent structure in the neighborhood. Visitors should be aware that not all areas are always open, and some sections may be in use for events or rehearsals.

The site was originally intended for tobacco production, but the discovery of ancient remains beneath the ground changed its purpose. The find revealed an old burial ground with traces of early Christianity, which was significant for the region.
