Amposta suspension bridge, Suspension bridge in Amposta, Spain
Amposta suspension bridge is a river crossing over the Ebro featuring two massive stone pillars with triumphal arches and a reinforced concrete structure. The bridge spans approximately 134 meters and combines vehicle lanes with separate sidewalks for pedestrians.
The bridge was built between 1915 and 1921 and replaced an earlier boat station at the location. It was one of the pioneering works in reinforced concrete suspension bridge construction in Spain and marked a shift in the region's transportation infrastructure.
The bridge holds the status of a local cultural asset and demonstrates how Amposta developed as a key transportation hub in the early 1900s. The stone arches and construction reflect the changes the town underwent through improved river crossing options.
The bridge is accessible for vehicles with one lane in each direction and for pedestrians via separate pathways. Plan time to observe the structure while crossing, and be aware that pathway conditions may vary.
The structure employs an innovative double-cable system with main support cables running along the sides and perpendicular spacer cables across the center span. This combination was a technical novelty in bridge engineering when completed.
