Presa d'Isbert, Stausee in Spanien
Presa d'Isbert is a concrete dam in Marina Alta built across the Girona River. It features an arc gravity design and covers about 8 hectares when filled with water, serving as a water storage structure for the surrounding farmland.
The dam was built between 1928 and 1944 to support irrigation following crop disease that devastated local farmers. Water began leaking through the limestone shortly after completion, requiring ongoing repair efforts.
The dam sits in the Barranc de l'Infern, a ravine carved by the Girona River over time. It reflects how the local community approached water management and resource sharing through practical solutions.
Visitors can reach the dam via walking trails PR-CV 181 and PR-CV 368, which wind through the natural surroundings. There are no shops or facilities nearby, so bring your own supplies for a comfortable visit.
About 200 meters from the dam lies a deep hole called Hoyo Lucifer, excavated during the dam's construction. This hidden feature is an overlooked detail of the site's building history.
