Torre Gironella, Ancient defensive tower in Girona, Spain

Torre Gironella is a defensive tower in Girona featuring visible layers from different construction periods, including Roman foundations, medieval walls, and a barrel vault resting on the original square base. The tower sits at the highest point of the Roman city wall and can be entered by stone stairs located in the entrance courtyard.

The tower was built around 994 and was rebuilt in 1411 following its collapse in 1404. Later, it suffered damage from Napoleonic explosions during 1814.

The tower shows how different architectural styles were layered over time, with Roman stone, medieval brickwork, and later defensive additions visible in its walls today. You can see how each period adapted and reinforced the structure for its own needs.

The best way to visit is on foot, since the tower is located on Girona's city wall in the old town and is easily reached on a walking tour. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for exploring the site and its surroundings.

Inside the tower is the Door of Juana Enríquez, named after a noble who reinforced the structure during a regional conflict in the 1400s. This doorway remains as a physical reminder of how individuals contributed to the city's defenses.
