Muralles de Girona, Medieval sandstone fortification in Girona, Spain.
The Muralles de Girona is a sandstone fortification system that encircles the old town with multiple defense towers and narrow openings designed for archers. The walls follow a continuous path that allows visitors to walk along and around the historic center.
Roman builders created the first fortifications in ancient times, which later received a complete reconstruction during the 14th century using new stone and techniques. This rebuilding strengthened the city against the military threats of that era.
The walls shape how visitors experience the old town and show how medieval communities defended themselves. Walking along the path, you notice how the architecture reflects the city's need to protect its residents across centuries.
You can enter the walls at multiple locations and complete the full circuit in around two hours of walking. The path is mostly level and straightforward, making it accessible for most visitors.
The eastern section houses the Torre Gironella, which offers views of the city's terracotta rooftops and the distant Pyrenees Mountains. This vantage point is one of the most popular spots along the walls for photography and rest.
