Construcción vacía-Eraikuntza hutsa, Steel sculpture in Pasealeku Berria, Donostia, Spain.
Construcción vacía-Eraikuntza hutsa is a steel construction made of several angular pieces that intersect and frame empty space. The parts stand together without fully connecting, creating a visual dialogue between solid material and the space between them.
The work was created by artist Jorge Oteiza and installed in its current location in 2002. Before the sculpture arrived, the site housed a chapel that served as a memorial for victims of the ship Crucero Baleares.
The steel construction explores space and form through industrial materials in a way that reflects regional artistic approaches.
The sculpture is accessible year-round in an open public space and requires no special preparation to visit. You can walk around it and view it from different angles to understand how the forms relate to each other and the surrounding area.
The steel pieces were arranged so they nearly touch but never fully connect, which gives the work its name Construcción vacía. This intentional gap between elements allows viewers to discover emptiness itself as a design choice rather than an accident.
