Old Town, Historic quarter in San Sebastian, Spain
The Old Town is a medieval quarter in San Sebastián with eight pedestrian streets laid out in a grid pattern between Monte Urgull and La Concha Bay. The narrow lanes contain numerous bars and restaurants serving traditional local food and drinks.
The district was set on fire by French troops in 1813, but during reconstruction the original medieval grid layout was preserved. This rebuilding shaped the appearance visitors see today.
Constitution Square serves as the social hub where numbered balconies recall its past use as a bullring until 1846. Residents and visitors naturally gather here, and the architecture tells the story of this unique transformation.
The district spans less than one square kilometer but is packed with over 100 bars serving traditional local food. It is best explored on foot to fully experience the narrow streets.
During the annual Tamborrada festival in January, thousands of residents gather dressed as cooks and soldiers to play drums throughout the district. This four-day celebration has roots reaching back centuries and keeps local traditions alive.
