Embalse de Eugui, Spanish reservoir
The Embalse de Eugui is a reservoir completed in 1973 near the village of Eugi in Navarre. Water sits in a valley surrounded by forested slopes, with walking paths circling the basin and offering views across the water toward distant hills.
Construction began in 1968 to supply water to Pamplona and surrounding areas. During the five-year building period, several structures disappeared beneath the rising water, including mills, bakeries, and rural farmhouses that had once stood in the valley.
The name comes from the village of Eugi, nestled in a Pyrenean valley. Local culture is deeply connected to bertsolarismo, a tradition of improvised singing in Basque that has been performed in these hills for generations.
A loop walk around the reservoir spans about 10 kilometers and takes roughly two hours to complete. The path alternates between paved and dirt sections but remains relatively flat and accessible for most visitors.
Beneath the water lie the remains of old buildings, including the birthplace of the renowned bertsolari Urbano Egozkue Gaskue. These submerged structures remind visitors of the human story that preceded this transformed landscape.
