Palacio de Santa Clara, Algorta, Palace in Getxo, Spain

Palacio de Santa Clara, also known as Martínez-Rivas etxea, stands at number 6 Foruak street in the Neguri district of Getxo. José María Basterra designed it in 1902 for Pedro Chalbaud in the Old English style, and Manuel María Smith rebuilt it in 1918 with Queen Anne ornament and an English-castle look.

José María Basterra designed the palace in 1902 for the businessman Pedro Chalbaud, built in the Old English style. A few years after construction, José María Martínez de las Rivas bought it from Chalbaud, and Manuel María Smith completely remodelled it in 1918, adding Queen Anne-style ornament and giving the building the look of an English castle. It now houses offices of the Getxo town council.

The building is also known as Martínez-Rivas etxea, after José María Martínez de las Rivas, who bought it from Pedro Chalbaud shortly after it was built. Since then it has housed offices of the Getxo town council, so the former residence is seen today as an administrative building in the centre of Neguri.

The building now houses administrative offices and serves mainly for official purposes. Visitors should be aware that access may be limited since it functions as an active government building.

The crenellated tower and surrounding wall are designed to resemble a medieval fortress rather than a typical residential palace. This was an intentional choice to make the building appear more fortified and imposing than the usual villas in the area.
