Padellàs's House, Gothic palace in Gothic Quarter, Spain
Padellàs's House is a Gothic palace now located at Plaça del Rei that houses exhibitions about the city's history and heritage. The building has multiple floors arranged around a central courtyard with a stone staircase that connects the different exhibition spaces.
The building was originally constructed on Carrer dels Mercaders, but in 1931 it was carefully taken apart stone by stone and relocated to its current site. This unusual rescue saved the palace from demolition and preserved a remarkable example of medieval architecture.
The palace served as the home of wealthy merchants and shows how important the Mercaders street was for medieval trade in the city. Walking through its rooms, you can get a sense of how a noble family lived during that era.
The main entrance is at Plaça del Rei, where you can get information about what is on display. You should be prepared for stairs as you move between the different exhibition floors.
Inside the palace is a Flemish clock from 1576 that once kept time for the entire city. The clock demonstrates how the way Barcelona measured time changed over the centuries.
