Topos V, Public sculpture in Gothic Quarter, Barcelona, Spain
Topos V is a cast iron sculpture at Plaça del Rei with four sides, two closed and two facing the square. The geometric forms create a three-dimensional object that shifts in appearance depending on where you stand.
The work was created in 1986 by Eduardo Chillida following an exhibition at the Joan Miró Foundation. Barcelona acquired it afterward to join its growing collection of public art.
The openings in the work echo the medieval arches found in nearby structures like the Saló del Tinell. This conversation between modern form and historic surroundings shapes how visitors experience the space.
The sculpture stands at the Plaça del Rei entrance and is easily reached on foot, especially from the nearby Jaume I Metro station. Daytime visits let you see the geometric forms most clearly as light plays across the iron surfaces.
The enclosed spaces can be entered and explored by visitors, creating an unexpected experience of being inside the sculpture. This immersive quality sets it apart from most other public artworks in the city.
