The fortress contains three circular towers and two rectangular ones, surrounded by a perimeter wall with artillery parapets and a moat.
Gil de Vivero constructed the castle in the 1470s during King Henry IV's succession instability, later selling it to the Duke of Alba in 1489.
The architecture combines Gothic and Mudejar elements, featuring vaulted underground chambers and a central courtyard with stone balustrades and arches.
The castle requires immediate preservation efforts due to its deteriorating state, with several collapsed sections and vegetation growing inside the structure.
The underground vaulted stables within the castle complex represent some of the most intact medieval equestrian facilities in Europe.
