Our Lady of Remembrance College, Jesuit secondary school in Madrid
Our Lady of Remembrance College, also known as Colegio Nuestra Señora del Recuerdo, is a Jesuit school in the Chamartín district of Madrid, spread across a large campus. The campus brings together buildings from different periods, including neo-Gothic structures with pointed windows, sports fields, a chapel, a library, and science laboratories.
The school was founded in 1880, after King Alfonso XII brought the Jesuits back to Spain following a period of exile. A building completed in 1920 combines Gothic and Moorish elements, drawing inspiration from the house where Saint Ignatius of Loyola was born.
The school takes its name from the Virgen del Recuerdo, a figure of the Virgin Mary venerated as patron since the school opened. The chapel on the grounds remains a visible center of school life, where religious feasts and community gatherings take place throughout the year.
The campus is in the Chamartín district and is easy to reach by public transport, with several metro and bus stops nearby. Visitors interested in the architecture should plan enough time to walk through the different parts of the grounds at a comfortable pace.
During the Spanish Civil War, the buildings were used as military barracks, a period that left visible marks on parts of the campus. There are also unconfirmed stories suggesting Napoleon Bonaparte passed through this area in the early 1800s, long before the school existed.
