Puig dels Llops, Mountain summit in La Vall d'en Bas, Spain.
Puig dels Llops is a mountain summit in the Serralada Transversal Catalana range, in the comarca of La Vall d'en Bas in northeastern Spain, reaching 1,486 meters. It sits on the edge of the Garrotxa region, an area shaped by old volcanic activity and covered by dense oak and beech forests.
The peak appears in old Catalan geographical records as a reference point for the surrounding region, used by shepherds and traders crossing the area for centuries. Its position on the edge between different valleys made it a natural landmark long before any marked trails existed.
The name Puig dels Llops means "hill of the wolves" in Catalan, a reference to a time when wolves roamed these forests. Today the summit is a meeting point for local hikers who come on weekends to enjoy the open views over the Garrotxa.
The clearest starting points are in the villages of La Vall d'en Bas, where trail signs are easy to follow. The path gains elevation steadily, so solid footwear and a layer for wind at the top are a good idea since conditions can change quickly at this height.
Although the summit sits just outside the official boundaries of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, it offers one of the clearest views over the dormant volcanic cones that dot the valley below. This makes it a rare spot where the layout of the volcanic field becomes easy to read at a glance.
