Palace of the Parliament of Catalonia

The Palace of the Parliament of Catalonia is a three-story neoclassical building with a cross-shaped layout and four interior courtyards, built using stone from Montjuïc Mountain. Red tile decorations and facade ornaments characterize this structure, which sits at the heart of Ciutadella Park.

Engineer Jorge Próspero de Verboom designed this structure in 1727 as a military arsenal for the fortress. After decades of transformation, it became the seat of the Catalan Parliament in 1932.

The building displays 28 busts of Catalan artists on its facade and houses contemporary artworks by Joan Miró and Antoni Tàpies in its halls. These pieces reflect the connection between Catalan artistic expression and the region's political institutions.

The building is located at the center of the park and easy to reach from the main entrance, with guided tours available on certain days. The best time to visit is in the morning when it is less crowded and the facade is more visible.

The building preserves its original vaulted galleries and central dome from its arsenal days, while incorporating modern parliamentary chambers into its historical spaces. This blend of old and new architecture is particularly visible inside.
