Barcelona Zoo

Barcelona Zoo is located within Parc de la Ciutadella and displays animals in spacious enclosures designed to resemble their natural environments with vegetation and water features. The facility houses mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians from various climates and ecosystems around the world.

The facility began in 1892 when a private animal collection was placed in historic buildings left from the 1888 World Exhibition. Over time it evolved from a simple menagerie into a center focused on animal welfare and scientific study.

The zoo serves as a place where visitors encounter animals displayed in settings that mimic their natural surroundings, making learning about wildlife possible without traveling to distant habitats. The park is easily reached by metro from Ciutadella Vila Olímpica station, making arrival straightforward. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water, as you will be on your feet for extended periods and shade is limited in many areas.

The zoo operates breeding and rehabilitation programs for endangered species like the Iberian lynx, treating injured or sick animals and returning them to wild populations when possible. Most visitors overlook this conservation work happening behind the scenes, which is central to the facility's mission.
