Barcelona a Prim, Memorial statue in Parc de la Ciutadella, Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona a Prim is a bronze equestrian statue in Parc de la Ciutadella near the entrance to Barcelona Zoo. The figure wears military dress and holds its hat, mounted on a rectangular base decorated with two relief panels showing historical military events.
The original was erected in 1887 but destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Sculptor Frederic Marès created a replacement in 1948 that still stands today.
Two bronze reliefs on the pedestal display important military achievements: the Battle of Castillejos and the signing of the Convention of La Soledad.
The statue is easily reached by metro, with several nearby stations providing quick access to the park. The grounds are free to enter and open to foot traffic throughout the day.
The bronze used for the original statue came from mortars sourced at Montjuïc Castle, connecting military history with artistic creation.
