Monument in memory of gays, lesbians and retaliated transsexuals

Monument in memory of gays, lesbians and retaliated transsexuals, LGBTQ+ memorial monument in Parc de la Ciutadella, Barcelona, Spain.

Description

This memorial dedicated to gays, lesbians and retaliated transgender individuals is a triangular monument made of pink marble, standing in the northeastern section of Parc de la Ciutadella near the Marquès de l'Argentera Avenue entrance. The structure has a simple but striking presence within the park landscape.

History

The memorial was unveiled in 2011 following years of discussions about where to locate such a monument in Barcelona. Its placement in the park became the final choice after earlier proposals, including a location near Sagrada Familia, were not pursued.

Culture

The monument displays inscriptions honoring those who faced persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and it serves as a gathering place where visitors pause to pay respects. The pink stone itself has become a symbol of remembrance and dignity within the city.

Practical

The monument sits in the park's northeastern area and is easy to find by heading toward the Marquès de l'Argentera avenue from any park entrance. The ground is flat and accessible, so visitors of all abilities can view it without difficulty.

Did you know?

The pink triangle shape references the badge that marked gay prisoners in concentration camps, transforming a symbol of shame into one of remembrance and respect. This reversal of meaning gives the monument its powerful message.
