Pantà de Riudecanyes, stuwmeer in Riudecanyes, Spanje
The Pantà de Riudecanyes is a large water storage reservoir located near the village of Riudecanyes in Catalonia. Surrounded by pine trees and hills, it holds water from the Riudecanyes stream to supply irrigation for the local farmland and nearby towns.
The reservoir was built in the early 1900s, with the main structure completed around 1907 and operations beginning in 1918. Engineer José Pérez de Petinto led significant expansion work around 1919, with further enlargements continuing through the 1930s until 1951.
The Pantà de Riudecanyes is a reservoir that has shaped the farming community for over a century and continues to connect people through shared water management. The structure reflects how agriculture and community cooperation define the character and rhythm of daily life in this rural region.
Visitors can walk along the edges of the reservoir to enjoy views of the water and surrounding landscape. Access is best via the road toward Duesaigues, where you can stop near the dam to take in the scenery.
The water displays three distinct shades of blue: the freshwater appears deep blue, the distant Mediterranean shines in lighter turquoise, and the sky shifts between them. This color contrast occurs because the reservoir sits elevated above sea level.
