The Plaça de la Independència features 50 columns forming porticos with heights of 6.70 meters and average widths of 4.5 meters around its perimeter.
Built in 1856 following designs by architect Martí Sureda Deulovol, this square stands on the former location of the Sant Agustí convent after its dissolution in 1835.
The central monument, created by sculptor Antoni Parera in 1894, honors the defenders of Girona during the 1808-1809 Napoleonic sieges.
The square contains numerous restaurants under its arcades and serves as a central meeting point for social gatherings throughout the year.
The plaza maintains strict architectural guidelines established in 1859, defining specific volumes, compositions, and materials for all buildings within its 92x45 meter space.
