Santuari del Far, Religious sanctuary in Susqueda, Spain
The Santuari del Far is a small stone chapel set on a mountain summit in the municipality of Susqueda, in Catalonia. The building has a rectangular nave with a vaulted ceiling and a short bell tower attached to one side.
The chapel first appears in written records in 1269, when a man named Pere Jaume left his assets to it. It remained a place of worship through the centuries, even as the valley below was flooded by a reservoir in the 20th century.
The Santuari del Far is one of the few religious sites in the area that remained accessible after the Susqueda reservoir flooded the valley below, swallowing several villages. People who climb here often bring food and rest in the shade of the old walls after the walk up.
The chapel is only reachable on foot, as no road leads to the summit. Good walking shoes are advisable, since the path involves some climbing and the weather at the top can change quickly.
The bell tower was built with an unusually wide, low base to reduce the risk of lightning strikes on the exposed summit. This shape is not a random design choice but a direct response to the conditions of the site.
