Torrespaña, Broadcasting tower in Salamanca district, Madrid, Spain

Torrespaña is a concrete broadcasting tower in Madrid's Salamanca district that rises approximately 232 meters above the ground with four stacked antenna platforms crowning its top. The cylindrical structure is covered with numerous antennas that transmit television and radio signals across the region.

This tower was completed in 1982 and served as broadcasting infrastructure for major sporting events of that year. It marked an important step in the development of modern transmission systems in Spain.

Local people call this tower El Pirulí because of how its shape resembles a traditional Spanish lollipop. The nickname shows how much this building has become part of daily conversation in the city.

This tower is not open to the public since it is an active broadcasting facility staffed by trained professionals. You can view and photograph the structure from various angles throughout the neighborhood from street level.

Inside the tower sits an elevator surrounded by more than 1,200 stairs that lead to the control rooms. This staircase labyrinth is a hidden detail that reveals how complex the internal construction really is.
