Pontillón de Castro Reservoir, reservoir in Pontevedra, Spain
The Pontillón de Castro Reservoir is a large body of water in Verducido near Pontevedra, created by a concrete dam measuring 159 meters long. The lake covers about 6 square kilometers and is fed mainly by the Rons river and smaller streams in the surrounding area.
Construction began in the 1930s and was completed in 1943, with an expansion undertaken in the 1950s. The project represented an important step in securing water supply for Pontevedra and surrounding communities during the post-war period.
The reservoir takes its name from the nearby Castro hill, which holds historical significance for the region. Today, the site is used by locals and visitors to spend time in nature and to honor the traditional stoneworkers who built the dam through a monument on the hilltop.
The area features marked trails of about 4 kilometers around the reservoir with rest areas, picnic spots, and parking. A walk across the dam itself allows you to observe the structure and view the water from different vantage points.
A monument on the summit of the nearby Outeiro do Castro hill honors the craftsmanship of the stoneworkers who built the dam. The climb to the monument offers broad views of the entire reservoir and surrounding landscape, with sight of an active quarry site.
